At the briefing the Chief of Stuff to the SBU Head Oleksandr Tkachuk and the Chief of the Main Military CI Directorate of the CI Department of the SBU Major General Serhii Levchenko informed that the SBU Military Counterintelligence under procedural supervision of the Military Prosecutor’s Office prevented illegal use of arms during peaceful actions in Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kyiv.
‘During the special operation in Odesa the SBU officers revealed a contract soldier who insistently looked for an opportunity to buy great number of small arms’, Oleksandr Tkachuk informed. According to him, ultimately the criminal paid for and got 12 Kalashnikov assault rifles and a Dragunov sniper rifle. ‘Although his plans were much greater – he intended to purchase dozens of weapons’, Tkachuk stressed.
The criminal planned to transport the submachine guns and rifles to Kyiv to use them during the mass events in the period of February 20-22. The Military CI officers apprehended the criminal during the controlled purchase of arms.
‘The personality of the criminal is very interesting. He is the follower of the radical fan movement that propagates Pan-Slavism ideas. In addition, according to the operational data and the contract soldier himself, he supports the ideology of creating fake pseudo-governmental formations’, the Chief of Stuff to the SBU Head said.
Oleksandr Tkachuk mentioned that all actions and intentions of the criminal were under total control of the Military Counterintelligence agents and were meticulously recorded during secret investigations – the control under perpetration of crime.
‘We knew every steps and plans of this criminal. We were aware of the definite place of obtaining weapons; the place where he intended to hide the weapons and take it to the capital’, the Chief of the Main Military Counterintelligence Directorate of the Counterintelligence Department of the Security Service of Ukraine Major General Serhii Levchenko said.
He underlined that the assault rifles were not the only whim of the criminal. ‘The contractor wanted to buy specific samples of weapons – noiseless sniper rifles and large-caliber machine-guns of Russian production’, noticed Levchenko.
The Major General drew attention of media representatives to specific date – the criminal accented on the fact that he had to receive weapons maximum till February 20.
The Military Prosecutor’s Office initiated criminal proceeding under Article 263 (unlawful handling of weapons) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The Article could be reclassified during ongoing investigations.
