The SBU prevents incidents in the Zaporozhzhya nuclear power station

The SBU officers prevented incidents in the critical infrastructure facility of increased danger - Zaporizhzhya nuclear power station.

The SBU operatives in cooperation with the Police Office under the procedural guidance of the Prosecutor's Office uncovered a multimillion deal in course of examination of the station's equipment for seismic stability.

At the beginning of 2016, the Zaporozhzhya nuclear power station officials signed an agreement with a private structure to carry out investigation on the implementation of calculations of seismic effects on equipment and pipelines of the reactor units of two power units of the nuclear power plant.

The law enforcers established that the technical reports of performing calculation analysis and determination of the seismic resistance of the equipment are composed with numerous violations. They also didn’t undergo a compulsory examination and didn’t get the review of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspection of Ukraine. Despite this, the officials of the nuclear power station confirmed the execution of works and transferred more than UAH 18,000,000 (USD 692,307) to businessmen accounts.

According to the experts, the documentation developed by the offenders fell below the state requirements and doesn’t give an objective assessment of the seismic threats to the equipment and pipelines of the station. Subsequent exploitation of the station’s facility on the basis of low-quality calculations could lead to the failure of power units and create real prerequisites for the occurrence of an ecological catastrophe.

In the framework of the initiated criminal proceeding, the leading engineer of the station was notified of suspicion of committing crimes stipulated by Articles 364 and 366 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The investigation is under way.
