Officers of the SBU Internal Security Department exposed the mechanism of extorting money from the ATO members, allegedly on behalf of top SBU officers.
The SBU operatives established that the criminal introduced himself to ATO veterans allegedly on behalf of the top officers of different units of the SBU Central and Regional Offices. For a monetary reward, Ternopil resident promised to assist in allocating the state-guaranteed social benefits such as land plots and accommodation.
Law enforcers documented the offender demanding $10,000 from ATO veteran for “receiving” a flat in Kyiv, capital of Ukraine. The SBU officers in cooperation with the National Police detained the individual in Ternopil on receiving the stated amount of the bribe.
"We will cruelly painstakingly uproot any unlawful schemes, both within our own structures and those devised by the criminals who are committing crimes using SBU as a smokescreen,” said Vasil Hrytsak, the Head of the special service.
Criminal proceeding was initiated under Part 3 Article 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
