SBU warns of the attempted kidnapping by Russian intelligence services of a Russian citizen (video)
Employees of SBU CI Department during a multi-level operation thwarted an attempt by Russian special services to abduct from the territory of our country a Russian citizen who in 2014 moved to Ukraine as a sign of disagreement with the aggressive Kremlin policies.
SBU officers found that to transfer the person to Russian territory, Russian special services recruited a group of residents of the Kharkiv region headed by a former police officer. The perpetrators worked periodically in Russia, had previous convictions on violent crimes in Ukraine and administrative offences in Russia.
For the execution of the “dirty” work - that is, kidnapping of the Russian from the place of his residence and transfer, in a designated location on the territory of the Kharkiv region, the leader of the gang forked out a reward of USD 23,000 to representatives of local criminal circles. The plan was to use sedatives for easy transfer of the Russian citizen over the state border of Ukraine to the territory of Russia and subsequent handing over to the representatives of Russia’s special services.
As a result of a multi-level special operation involving the units of the National Police in the Kharkiv region, SBU CI operatives prevented the kidnapping of the Russian. Law enforcers detained all members of the criminal group on action of payment to the actual kidnappers and attempt to extract the person. The officers seized USD 23,000 were seized received from the Russian intelligence services for the execution of the criminal task and the means of communication with the Russian supervisors.
Relevant measures are being taken within the framework of criminal proceedings under Part 1, Art. 111 (state treason) and Part 2, Art. 146 (illegal deprivation of liberty or abduction of a person) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The issue of serving a notice of suspicion in committing the crime and choosing a measure of restraint in the form of custody is being decided upon by the court.
Urgent operational and investigative actions are ongoing.
