SBU detains members of the group, posing as SBU officers (video)
SBU officers exposed an organized criminal group involving members, which extorted from the regional businessmen under the guise of the SBU officers in Zaporizzhya.
The law enforcers established that the previously convicted local resident who was the head of the non-governmental organization created criminal group involving two criminals and the former officer of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The offenders created artificial conflict situations and, introducing themselves as the SBU officers, extorted money from the victims for “resolving” the incident. In case of refusing to pay the money, the participants of the criminal group threatened to hamper the business activity and to inflict bodily harm.
The SBU operatives documented extorting USD 80,000 from the local businessman.
The law enforcers detained two offenders in one of the central streets of Melitopol on receiving the subsequent "tranche" amounting to USD 8,000. Before this, the SBU officers documented receiving of USD 65,000 by the racketeers.
During searches in the offenders’ residences, the automatic weapons and ammo were seized.
The issues of serving a notice of suspicion to the detainees in committing the crime and choosing the measure of restraint in the form of custody are being decided. The investigative and operative actions in the framework of the criminal proceeding initiated under Part 4 Article 189 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine on searching two other offenders are under way.
The operation was conducted jointly with the Prosecutor's Office and the Police.
