Zaporizzhya region: SBU blocks large-scale illegal fishing in Azov Sea (video)
SBU officers in cooperation with the police and the maritime security of the State Border Guard Service blocked the large-scale illegal fishing in the Azov Sea.
The SBU operatives established that the heads of two state institutions in the spheres of the fishing industry and the marine ecology organized the scheme of illegal fishing during the spawning ban in the Azov Sea. Using the bio-resources quota, which also includes the spawning period, the officials issued permits to private businesses for catching of allegedly samples of fish necessary for conducting relevant research. In fact, the offenders committed poaching of fish in especially large amount.
During the special operation, the law enforcers detained and arrested two vessels containing about 10 tons of fish caught by poachers in the water zone of the Azov Sea.
During the 25 searches in the warehouses of the business entities involved in the illegal fishing, about 500 tons of fish and fish products were seized.
According to preliminary conclusions of experts, the sum of the state losses is about UAH 50,000,000 (almost USD 2,000,000).
The criminal proceeding was initiated under Part 2 Article 364 and Part 2 Article 249 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The investigative and operative actions on bringing all offenders involved in the illegal fishing to the criminal responsibility are under way.
