SBU exposes bribing mechanism used by officials of State Water Resources Agency
SBU officers in cooperation with the Prosecutor's Office uncovered the mechanism of systematic bribe-taking by the officials of the State Water Resources Agency.
The SBU operatives established that the officials of the State Water Resources Agency and the regional water companies extorted money from businessmen for approval of the individual technological standards on drinking water and for issuing permits for special water use. To hide illegal activity, the officials used business entities. According to the preliminary findings, using the scheme the offenders could have received about UAH 2,000,000 (USD 77,000) from the beginning of the year.
The law enforcers documented that one of the officials of the State Water Resources Agency extorted UAH 50,000 (almost USD 2,000) through a representative of the commercial structure. The law enforcers detained the official and the businessman in Kyiv on receiving the subsequent part of the unlawful benefit amounting to UAH 30,000 (USD 1,153).
During the authorized investigative actions in the residences of the detainees and other persons who may be involved in the illegal mechanism, the SBU operatives uncovered documents confirming that a number of the officials of the State Water Resources Agency were involved in the fraud.
The official and the businessman were served a notice of suspicion in committing the crime stipulated by Part 3 Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The issues of serving a notice of suspicion and choosing the measure of restraint in the form of custody for other offenders are being decided by the court.
