Kharkiv region: SBU detained members of organized racket group (video)

Employees of SBU Kharkiv Regional Office detained members of an organized group that terrorized local businessmen masquerading as members of Kharkiv ATO Veterans Association.

Special service operatives found that a group of criminals attacked the construction sites where commercial real estate was being built. They used physical violence, destroyed and damaged property, blocked the construction work. For stopping the actions, including the physical pressure on business, they, on behalf of the veteran NGO, demanded money, allegedly for charity.

SBU employees documented that from one of the developers the attackers required USD 30,000 for not impeding with his legitimate business activities.

Law enforcers detained two organisers of the group in Kharkiv, on their receiving the final part of the illegal benefit in the amount of USD 20,000. During the arrest, one of the criminals tried armed resistance, threatening to use a grenade. Firearms were used against the attacker, in compliance with the requirements of the legislation. The individual died from the wound in the hospital. Regretfully, he was a former ATO member.

The criminal proceeding was initiated under Article 189 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The offenders were served a notice of suspicion in committing the crime; the issue of choosing a measure of restraint is being decided.

The urgent investigations are under way.

The operation was conducted jointly with National Police, under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor's Office in Kharkiv region.

The lawfulness of the use of the service weapon by SBU employee is checked by the Military Prosecutor's Office of Kharkiv Garrison of the Joint Forces Operation.
