SBU blocked timber fraud at Odessa State Forestry
SBU officers blocked the consistent fraud of timber at two Odessa Regional forestry hubs.
Law enforcers established that officials of the state forestry created a so-called “reserve” of unaccounted-for timber under the guise of sanitary cutting. Using forged documents, officials sold the materials to local merchants at half-market prices. The detainees illegally processed timber into finished products using sawmills of state forestry units.
According to preliminary information, dealers, on average, sold up to 200 m3 of timber for almost UAH 1,500,000 (over USD 53,500) a month.
During the authorized investigations at state forestry units and residences of the criminals, law enforcers found the large volume of illegally logged timber of upmarket types, forged papers, off-the-record financial statements.
Investigations are ongoing within the framework of criminal proceeding initiated under Part 5 of Art. 191, Part 2 of Art. 246 and Part 2 of Art. 364 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
The operation was conducted jointly with the Prosecutor's Office.
