Kyiv: SBU exposes officials on systematic extortion for disability registration of ATO veterans
The SBU officers uncovered a corrupt Head of the Central MSEC No. 1 of Kyiv Medical & Social Commission Center and the expert doctor of the Central Military Medical Commission of the Ministry of Defense who set up an extortion scheme used on ATO veterans.
Special service operatives established that officials pressured ATO veterans demanding money for registering a disability group.
SBU officers detained the offenders at their desks on their receiving over UAH 42,000 (USD 1,500) for registration of disability for the ATO veteran who suffered a leg wound.
Within authorized investigation searches at the criminals’ workplaces and residences, law enforcers found over 20 file folders with documents of the ATO soldiers, each with the attached envelope full of cash.
The total amount of the seized cash is over USD 130,000.
Currently the issue is pending about serving the detainees with notice of suspicion under Part 3 of Art. 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The issue of choosing the measure of restraint is being decided.
The operation was conducted jointly with the Department for the Prevention and Detection of Corruption of the Kyiv City State Administration under the procedural guidance of the Kyiv Prosecutor's Office No. 5.
The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
