Odessa: SBU exposes ethnic group of extortioners
SBU officers blocked an organised ethnic group of extortioners, in cooperation with the National Police under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor's Office in Odessa.
SBU officers found that the gang consisted of earlier convicted natives of North Caucasus. The criminals, using violence and moral coercion, demanded non-existant debts from local citizens.
SBU operatives documented the fact of extortion of USD 1,000 from the local citizen. In case of non-payment, the racketeers threatened violence and physical harassment.
Law enforcers detained three members of so-called “force centre” of the group on one of Odesa streets during their receiving the “debt” money from the victim.
The issues of serving a notice of suspicion in committing a crime and choosing a measure of restraint are being decided. The investigative actions on bringing to criminal responsibility other offenders involved in the in the framework of the criminal proceeding initiated under Part 2 Article 189 and Part 2 Article 186 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine are under way.
