SBU exposes systematic abuses of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources officials

SBU officers in cooperation with the National Police Main Investigative Directorate, under the procedural guidance of the Prosecutor General's Office, exposed an illegal mechanism connected with the extortion of unlawful benefits in particularly large amounts, organized by officials of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.

SBU operatives documented that officials with the assistance of the officials of the ‘Environmental Protection Center’ State Enterprise, which is part of Kyiv Regional State Administration management, organized systematic bribe-receiving from business entities. Criminals received money for issuing licenses for the right to handle hazardous waste from commercial structures that do not have real production capacity to recycle it.

Law enforcers found that due to the illegal licensing of hazardous waste management of critical infrastructure facilities, waste was recycled in inappropriate places or was not recycled at all. According to experts, unskilled management of waste of oil, gas, chemical and metallurgical industries created references to significant environmental damage, as well as harm to life and health of the population and technogenic emergency.

In the course of authorized investigations on the places of work and residence of the criminals, personal vehicles and bank, law enforcers exposed documentation, flash drives, money in particularly large amounts, which indicate involvement in illicit frauds of officials of the Ministry.

Within the framework of criminal proceedings initiated under Part 3 of Art. 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine the issues of serving a notice of suspicion are being settled.

The investigative actions are under way.
