The SBU exposes leadership of Odesa Detention Facility on the bribetaking
The Security Service of Ukraine officials exposed the leadership of Odesa Detention facility on bribetaking.
Special service operatives found that the officials systematically demanded from the convicted and their relatives an unjustified benefit for easing the conditions of serving a sentence. SBU officers found that officials for pressure on detainees artificially held them in a custody or moved in the rooms where they were threatened with physical harassment by so-called “jailers" who cooperated with the administration of the facility.
During the pre-trial investigation, law enforcement officers documented the fact that one of the suspects was detained at the custody, from whom the offenders extorted USD 2000. His relatives had to transfer this amount to a bank card. Preliminary check found that only in 2018 more than UAH 2.3 million were transferred to this card.
During the conduct of authorized searches at the place of work and residence of the persons involved, the law enforcement officers seized bank cards, mobile phones, USD 1000 and UAH 60 000, and documentation confirming the illegal actions of the employees of the penitentiary system.
Two offenders were detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
The pre-trial investigation, carried out by the territorial administration of the SBI in Mykolaiv. The operation was conducted under the procedural supervision of the Military Prosecutor's Office of Odesa garrison.
