SBU prevents hacking attacks on state authorities related to election process

The SBU officers within the framework of counter-intelligence provision of the state's interests in the field of information security blocked the attempts of Russian special services to organize hacker attacks on state authorities related to preparing and conducting the electoral process.

SBU operatives established that Russian handlers hired a hacker from Zaporizzhya to spread malware tailored for intruding into the work of state information resources of Ukraine.

SBU officers documented that the criminal was the administrator of a closed hacking Internet forum based in Russia. He searched for performers among the active forum members who distributed harmful software for monetary rewards. Mass distribution was carried out through targeted e-mails, sent to the state institutions, as well as via vulnerable parts of Internet sites of state bodies.

According to specialists, such computer viruses are used, first of all, to block the activity of information resources through the connection to state registries of Ukraine, which could have created a threat to the work of servers and personal computers of election commissions.

SBU employees and the cyberpolice conducted searches at offender’s place of residence, finding computer equipment with software used for creation and updating of computer viruses. Law enforcers obtained almost 10 samples of malicious software, prepared for distribution among the participants of the closed hacking forum.

Within the framework of icriminal proceedings, computer equipment has been seized and sent for relevant examinations.
