SBU blocks cocaine smuggling channel from South America
SBU officers in Odesa region, jointly with the Prosecutor's Office, the National Police, the State Border Guard Service and the Odesa Customs of the State Fiscal Service, exposed and liquidated the maritime smuggling channel of large cocaine consignments from the South American country.
In course of checking cargoes transported from the countries traditionally seen as drug producers, law enforcement officers blocked attempts to transport a large cocaine consignment inside container of bananas imported into Ukraine.
During the in-depth inspection of the fruit container cargo, packages with white powder were found. Express analysis showed that the pre-packaged powder is cocaine. The total weight of the found drug is 257 kg, with an estimated price tag of over USD 51,000,000 on the black market. According to available data, the drugs were planned for transfer to EU countries.
Basing on the data available, the SBU initiated criminal proceeding under Part 3 Article 305 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
Investigative actions are under way.
Persons who are likely to be involved in the operation of the cocaine smuggling ring are being identified.
