SBU stops activity of sabotage-terrorist group of Russia’s special services in Ukraine - Vasyl Hrytsak (video)

SBU officers unveiled a sabotage-terrorist group of Russia’s special services in Ukraine, said SBU Head Vasyl Hrytsak at a joint briefing with the Chief Military Prosecutor Anatoly Matios.

The counter-intelligence agents of the Service detained seven members of the group, including two who are regular officers of Russian special services. “One more accomplice of subverters was arrested this morning,” added the Head of the SBU.

Since the beginning of 2017, several autonomous combat sabotage groups of Russian military intelligence have been sent from Russia and the so-called “DNR” to Ukraine, tasked with elimination of the officers of Ukrainian special services. “One of these groups committed a terrorist act in central Kyiv on June 27, 2017, blowing up the car of Maxim Shapoval, the General of the Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, killing the General,” said Vasyl Hrytsak.

In a similar scenario, on April 4, 2019, the executor of the terrorist act aka the leader of the Russian sabotage group suffered heavy bodily injuries as a result of self-destruction of a bomb he tried to install under the car of another Ukrainian intelligence officer in Kyiv.

The Security Service of Ukraine has established the identity of the leader of the combat sabotage group who was installing the explosion device. This is a Russian citizen, Komarichev Alexei Anatolievich, who is an officer of Russian military intelligence. The SBU has also established the location and detained in a “safehouse” another member of the sabotage group, a Russian citizen Dzortov Timur Movlaevich. He served in the personal security of the Head of the Republic of Ingushetia, reaching in 2015-2017 the position of the Deputy Chief of Administration of the Head of Ingushetia. “Both detainees are citizens of the Russian Federation, but in order to cover their terrorist activity in Ukraine, they received passports of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan,” said the SBU Head.

In the course of investigation of both terrorist attacks, thanks to the SBU operatives, who implemented a number of counter-intelligence operations, to the SBU investigators and the prosecutors of the Main Military Prosecutor's Office, conclusive evidence was collected – it shows that both terrorist acts were planned, funded and carried out by Russian special services. “These were joint operations of the Federal Security Service and the General Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (GRU). In both cases, the organization and implementation was provided by the same officers of the special services,” stressed Vasyl Hrytsak.

As special service operatives have established, Komarichev and Dzortov planned their first attempt to kill the Ukrainian military counter-intelligence officer back in 2017, with the assistance of representatives of the so-called “DNR Ministry of State Security”, in particular, Ukrainian citizen Shutov Oleg Mykolaiovych. The investigation established that it was this person who installed an explosive device under the car of General Maxim Shapoval.

The SBU found that Shutov is a staff officer of the Centre for Special Operations of the DNR Ministry of State Security, headed by Vasyl Evdokimov (nicknamed “Lenin”). “It was Evdokimov-Lenin who on the task of Russian intelligence services organised explosion of the car of Alexander Haraberyush, colonel of SBU counter-intelligence in Mariupol on March 31, 2017," Vasyl Hrytsak reminded.

In 2017, following the instructions of Russia’s intelligence services, Shutov was personally engaged in preparation of a new terrorist act, to be executed by Komarichev and Dzortov. All the time Shutov remained in Donetsk, coordinating his agents via encrypted correspondence. Operatives of the Security Service of Ukraine have identified all members of this agent network.

As a result of the actions taken by the SBU, Russian intelligence services cancelled the operation in 2017, but did not relinquish the idea to organize a terrorist act. Starting May 2018, the preparation of the operation to liquidate the officer of Ukrainian intelligence was given to another person. Namely, a citizen of the Russian Federation Kushtov Bashir Abdulhamidovich.

As the SBU has learned, the actions of Kustov, Komarichev and Dzortov were coordinated by a person named “Rustem” - the Assistant to the Chief of the General Directorate of the General Staff of Russia’s Armed Forces. Rustem personally took care of the training of both killers and made decisions on a specific time and method of liquidation of the officer of the Ukrainian special services, and also informed the executors about weapons and explosives caches in Kyiv.

“But the real organiser of the killings that resulted in the death of Alexander Haraberyush and Maxim Shapoval and targeted another officer of the Ukrainian special services, is the lieutenant-general of Russia’s FSB Minayev Dmitry Viktorovich, the head of the Department of counter-intelligence operations of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation,” stressed the SBU Chairman.

On the days when the cars of Haraberyush and Shapoval were blown up, Minaev personally controlled the final phase of the terrorist operations from the so-called “Special Operations Centre of the DNR Ministry of State Security” in Donetsk.

“The law enforcement officers found that during the preparation of the terrorist attack, Russian intelligence officers freely used the public databases for Ukrainian citizens, including the “Safe City” system, to collect the necessary information and organize remote monitoring of the objects, selected for liquidation,” said Anatoliy Matios.

Obtained by the SBU plans of Russian special services show that their terrorist activity is not limited to Ukraine but rather threatens other countries, in particular, those in the European Union. “In their subversive actions, Russia’s special services violate all norms of international law,” marked Vasyl Hrytsak.
