SBU Sectoral State Archive presents a collection of documents devoted to the Chernobyl disaster
A presentation of a systematic collection of documents "Chornobyl Records of the KGB, Public Attitudes. Chornobyl NPP in the post-war period" was held in Kyiv.
The event was attended by Director of Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance Volodymyr Vyatrovych, professor of Ukrainian history at Harvard University Serhii Plokhii, editor of the publication Ukrainian historian and ethnographer Oleh Bazhan, as well as former liquidator and commander of the platoon of radiation intelligence Serhii Mirnyi.
The publication presented to the general public was prepared by the SBU Sectoral State Archive together with the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine with the assistance of Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance on the basis of declassified archival documents of the USSR KDB.
The edition contains documents of 986-1991, covering the post-Chernobyl life - public attitudes, daily life, measures to eliminate the consequences of the disaster. The book, in particular, depicts models of situational behavior of various groups of the population of Ukraine after the publication of information about a major "nuclear disaster", as well as the response of the world community to the Chernobyl tragedy.
A separate category of materials constitute the Soviet state security authorities informing of correspondent bodies on the the state of Chernobyl NPP, measures taken to increase the safe use of the “Shelter” facility, the situation in the exclusion zone.
Addressing the audience, the SBU SSA Director Andriy Kohut said that the presented edition is the first part of that array of information to be published. He also announced that the second issue will cover the period of the construction of the Chernobyl NPP and directly the accident.
