SBU blocks the activities of interregional criminal organization
Employees of the Security Service of Ukraine uncovered and blocked the activities of a criminal organization that controlled the multimillion-dollar turnover of money obtained from illegal activity in different regions of our country.
Special service operatives established that the group was headed by “criminal lords" which coordinated the activities of criminal groups in Kherson, Odesa and Zaporizzhya regions. Attackers through an extensive network of so-called “supervisors" set up collection of money from drug trafficking, robberies, fraud schemes, car thefts and racketeering of business representatives.
The offenders also collected money from prisoners from four penal colonies and a detention center in the Kherson region. Members of the group received “profit", including from drug trafficking in places of detention and extortion of money from prisoners' relatives.
Criminals transferred part of the received money to the so-called “collective fund", which was stored in the accounts drawn up on the controlled figureheads. According to preliminary estimates, the profit amount of only one regional branch of the criminal organization amounted to almost 23 million hryvnias.
Currently four involved persons were served notices of suspicion of committing the crime stipulated by Part 2 Art. 189 and Part 2 Art. 307 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The issue of choosing a custody as a measure of restraint is currently being settled.
Within the framework of criminal proceedings initiated under Art. 255 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine the investigative actions on bringing to criminal responsibility other members of the criminal group are ongoing.
The special operation to uncover offenders was conducted by special task forces units of the SBU Offices in Kherson, Odesa and Zaporizzhya regions under the coordination of the SBU Main Directorate for Combating Corruption and Organized Crime, together with investigators of the National Police and border guards under the procedural guidance of the Prosecutor's Office of the AR of Crimea.
