Lviv region: SBU blocks network of illegal alcohol production
An organized criminal group was uncovered in Lviv region. The criminals set up a large-scale network of illegal production and sale of alcoholic beverages.
SBU operatives established that eight residents of the region organised full-cycle manufacturing of counterfeit vodka products in garages, warehouses and utility premises. The product was made of illegal raw materials of questionable quality.
The counterfeiters used fake excise labels to sell the products through retail stores in many regions of Ukraine under the guise of well-known brands.
During the authorized investigative actions, law enforcement officers found alcohols of unknown origin and a batch of counterfeit alcoholic beverages worth over USD 40,000. Blending containers and fake excise labels were also seized.
The operation of the illegal network contributed to growth of the shadow economy and could have caused significant damage to the health of citizens.
Within the framework of criminal proceedings initiated under Part 3 Art. 28 (“Criminal offence committed by a group of persons, or a group of persons upon prior conspiracy, or an organized group, or a criminal organization”), Part 2 Art. 204 (“Unlawful manufacturing, storage, sale or transportation for selling purposes of excisable goods”), Part 3 Art. 199 (“Making, storage, purchase, transportation, mailing, or bringing into Ukraine for selling purposes, or sale of counterfeit money, government securities or state lottery tickets”) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, all persons involved were served notice of suspicion of committing a crime. The detainees received custody as a measure of restraint, with the right of bail.
The criminals were exposed with the help of investigators of the State Fiscal Service under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor's Office in Lviv region.
