Khmelnytskyi region: SBU exposes official of State Service on extortion of money from businessmen
Within the framework of combating systemic corruption, the SBU exposed on systemic bribes the head of one of the Directorates of the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection in Khmelnytsky region.
SBU operatives established that the official had organised a scheme of obtaining an illegal financial gain from the representatives of commercial entities involved in the retail sale of food. He demanded money for “shielding” businessmen from the administrative responsibility and for cancelling the fines levied during the inspections. SBU servicemen, in particular, documented the fact that the official demanded UAH 10,000 (USD 400) of illicit financial gain from a local businessman.
Law enforcers detained the criminal at the office, on his receiving the full amount of the bribe. Within the framework of the criminal proceedings stipulated by Part 3 of Art. 368 (“Accepting of an offer, promise or receiving of an illicit financial gain by an official”) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine the investigative actions are ongoing.
The issue of serving a suspect a notice of suspicion in committing a crime and choosing a measure of restraint is being decided.
The operation was conducted jointly with the Economic Security Directorate, with the assistance of the Department for Preventing Corruption of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection.
