Zhytomyr region: SBU blocks tax evasion centre used in vehicles’ customs clearance
The SBU officers exposed an interregional centre of tax evasion “specialising” on customs clearance for vehicles using lower-than-estimated value.
In the framework of implementation of state strategy to counteract the “shadowing” of the state's economy, SBU employees established that a group of persons registered several resident companies in Zhytomyr and Rivne, as well as non-resident companies - offshore. The companies’ bank account details were used when importing vehicles from the EU countries. By underestimating value of vehicles and reducing mandatory customs payments to the state budget, the cost of vehicles was practically halved.
Reportedly, since the beginning of the year the perpetrators imported over 400 vehicles (lorries, buses, minibuses, automobiles etc.) which passed the customs clearance at underestimated value on the "clients” order. According to the preliminary evaluation, the budget was raided for approximately UAH 10,000,000 (USD 400,000) of mandatory customs payments.
In the framework of the investigation, the law enforcement held 15 searches at the Zhytomyr Customs offices and its structural subdivisions, as well as at the places of companies’ registration address. During the investigative actions, draft accounting records, registration and accounting documentation, customs clearance documentation, companies’ seals and office equipment were seized.
The investigators of the SBU Office in Zhytomyr region conduct the pre-trial investigation to check the information on the customs officials’ involvement into the illegal activity.
The operation was run under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor's Office in Zhytomyr region.
