Donetsk region: new memorial of deceased servicemen opened
SBU officers opened memorial of deceased servicemen who gave their lives for Ukraine in Novoselivka village, Donetsk region, near the Karachun mountain. The monument is installed at the place of the crashed Mi-8 helicopter with SBU and Army officers that was shot down by militants in June 2014.
That day, June 24, 2014 Ukrainian servicemen were returning to their dislocation having performed another special task: SBU officers completed work on a Ukrainian checkpoint, having installed and tuned-up a telecommunication equipment for monitoring and recording the facts of breach of the ceasefire.
Despite the announced truce, the helicopter was attacked by militants with a rocket. As result of the explosion and crash of the aircraft, all the nine servicemen on board were killed: Army officers - Lieutenant Colonel Andrii Belkin, Major Dmytro Shynhur, Major Ruslan Mazurov, Gefreiter Oleksii Volokhov and Gefreiter Oleksandr Kondakov; SBU officers - Lieutenant Colonel Ihor Horbenko, Lieutenant Colonel Volodymyr Shkira, Captain Oleksandr Petrashchuk and Senior Warrant Officer Marko Shpak.
The relatives of the killed soldiers, officers of SBU, Armed Forces of Ukraine, National Guard of Ukraine, local authorities, public activists and locals took part in the ceremony.
At the opening ceremony Mykola Kuleshov, a Chief of the Department of counter-intelligence protection of state information security, emphasized that the memory about the heroes will last in the hearts of their relatives, comrades and nationals forever.
The participants honoured the heroes by a minute of silence and put flowers to the memorial.
