Cutting forest shelterbelt along the rail-tracks in Kharkiv region posed threat to transport infrastructure

Potential emergencies at transport infrastructure facilities through logging the trees of shelterbelt along the rail tracks in the Kharkiv region was prevented by the Security Service of Ukraine.  

The organized group, which included five local people, was engaged in illegal logging of trees for sale. Forest belts that attracted the offenders were located along the main rail track and were planted to protect the transport communication from erosion of railway embankments.

Destruction of trees for ten months has caused almost USD 200,000 losses to the state budget.

Law enforcement officers detained all group members according to Art. 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine during another illegal logging of trees near the railway tracks with heavy traffic, on the territory of Zmiiv district of Kharkiv region.

In place of the offence, officers found piles of cut timber and four heavy duty vehicles. Also, two pistols, revolvers and RGD-5 grenade were seized from the residences of the defendants.   

The detainees were served a notice of suspicion of committing crimes stipulated by Part 3 Article 28, Part 4 Article 246 and Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The issue of choosing a custody as a measure of restraint is currently being settled.

The investigative and operative actions on establishing and bringing to criminal responsibility other offenders involved in the illegal activities are under way.

The special operation was conducted by the SBU Department in Kharkiv Region jointly with the SBU Main Directorate of Economic Counter-Intelligence Protection of the State's Interests and the National Police, under the procedural guidance of the Prosecutor's Office in Kharkiv region.
