Security Service of Ukraine this year celebrates the 25-th anniversary of two important events. In 1994, the SBU SSA was established by the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. In the same year the SBU became the co-founder of scientific and documentary journal “From Archives of VUChK-GPU-NKVD-KGB".
Now the SBU SSA is at the top of the international ranking of accessibility to the KGB archives among the former Soviet countries. This achievement is important not only because rethinking of the past, but also to effectively counter threats to national security of Ukraine in our days. Cause the methods used by the Russian aggressor, were founded in Soviet times and since that time largely unchanged.
In total for its existence the SSA prepared 52 scientific and documentary editions and collections of documents, 6 studies, 212 scientific articles and over 100 popular science publications. "Disclosure of the truth about our difficult past is an effective tool to overcome the Russian campaign of propaganda and fake news" - SBU Chairman Ivan Bakanov emphasized in his speech. On the occasion of two anniversaries a thematic conference: "Archives of communist special services: the formation, use, interpretations” was conducted in Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. It was attended by researchers, archivists, historians and experts of institutions of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, leading universities, museum institutions and research centers. The participants discussed points of the activities of archival institutions that preserve Soviet special services’ documents, and issues on the history of the XX century in the light of the documents of the Communist special services.
