Kyiv: SBU detains Russian citizen on extorting of USD 250,000 from businessman
SBU officers in cooperation with the National Police and the Prosecutor's Office detained a Russian citizen who threatened a Kyiv businessman with compromising information.
The law enforcers established that the offender moved to Ukraine in the beginning of this year. Through mutual friends he met a Kyiv businessman and began to collect information about his business and his family.
The man extorted USD 250,000 for “keeping silence”, otherwise threatening to distribute the businessman’s personal and family data that could damage his reputation.
The SBU officers detained the offender in one of the public catering establishments in the centre of Kiev on receiving the “advance money” amounting to USD 7,000.
The criminal proceeding was initiated under Part 4 Article 189 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The offender was served a notice of suspicion in committing the crime. The issue of choosing a measure of restraint is being decided.
The urgent investigative actions are under way.
