SBU exposes ethnic group terrorising Odesa residents

SBU officers in Odessa in cooperation with the National Police under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor's Office blocked an organised ethnic group engaged in armed assaults and money/valuables extortion from citizens.

SBU officers found that the gang consisted of natives of North Caucasus, for the most part the former convicts. According to the SBU, the activity of the gang was controlled by a “criminal lord” currently hiding from Ukrainian justice abroad. It was established that the group members were involved in committing a series of attacks using firearms, in robberies and money extortion. The criminals chose their victims among wealthy local residents and, threatening with physical harassment, forced them to pay a “tribute”.

In the framework of criminal proceeding initiated by Part 4 of Article 187 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, law enforcers detained three group members. During the eight simultaneous authorized searches in places of residence and hideouts of criminals, law enforcers seized firearms, ammo, jewelry and other valueables.

At present, the issues of serving a notice of suspicion to the detainees in committing the crime and choosing the measure of restraint are being decided.
