SBU exposes Volyn Customs officials on money extortion
Employees of the Security Service of Ukraine, in the framework of counteracting systemic corruption, exposed on bribes the chief state inspector and senior state inspector of “Pischa" customs post of the Volyn Customs of the State Fiscal Service.
Special service operatives have established that officials set up a mechanism for extorting money from citizens crossing the state border. For various amounts of unlawful profit, customs officials promised not to create artificial obstacles for people when lawfully importing personal belongings into the territory of Ukraine.
According to preliminary information, the size of the "tribute" that the Ukrainian customs imposed on Ukrainians depended, in particular, on the type and volume of things carried by citizens.
The law enforcers detained the chief state inspector near the workplace on his receiving another bribe. Previously, the SBU officers documented two more facts of "extortions" by customs officials.
The issue on serving a notice of suspicion of committing a crime to both involved persons and choosing of a preventive measure is now being settled. Within the framework of criminal proceedings initiated under Part 3 of Art. 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, urgent investigative actions on bringing to criminal responsibility other offenders possibly involved in the unlawful actions are under way.
The detection operation was conducted jointly with the State Bureau of Investigations under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor's Office.
