SBU exposes corrupt heads of Customs Post in Mykolaiv region

In the framework of counteraction corruption in executive authorities the SBU officers exposed on bribes heads of the Customs Post of Mykolaiv Customs of the State Fiscal Service.

Special service operatives established that the head of Customs Post together with his deputy and the customs broker set up a mechanism for obtaining improper advantage from representative of commercial entity engaged in foreign economic activity. For various amounts of unlawful benefit, officials promised the entrepreneur not to create artificial barriers when exporting goods to one of the countries of the Middle East.

Law enforcers detained the broker at the workplace on receiving the regular “tranche” amounting to USD 2000.

Previously, the SBU officers documented five episodes of receiving by Customs officials of improper advantage at a total amount of USD 6,000.

During searches in the administrative building of the Customs Post, in the residences of involved persons and in the broker’s vehicle nearly USD 27,000 and UAH 200,000 were seized.

At present, the head of the Customs Post and two his subordinates are detained in accordance with Art. 208 of the Criminal Procedural Code of Ukraine. The issue of serving to detainees notices of suspicion of committing the crime stipulated by Part 3 Art. 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and choosing of preventive measure is being resolved.

In order to identify all circumstances of the case and other Customs officials, possibly involved in illegal activity, the investigative actions are ongoing.

Measures to expose and detain the offenders were conducted jointly with the State Bureau of Investigations officials under the procedural guidance of the General Prosecutor's Office.
