Mykolaiv region: large-scale abuse of mineral resources by businessman
A Mykolaiv businessman was illegally mining sand on an industrial scale for further use in road construction and mortar-making.
SBU operatives established that after exhaustion of the sand quarry, its owner illegally occupied adjacent agricultural land, mainly state-owned. On his instructions, a layer of fertile soil was removed in these areas without special permission. The entrepreneur's actions led to modification of the terrain and widened the quarry, rendering impossible the further usage of the agricultural land.
It is recorded that the offender, abusing mineral resources, extracted 310,000 tons of sand with a total value of almost USD 1 million.
The criminal was served a notice of suspicion of criminal offences stipulated by Part 2 of Art. 364-1 (“Abuse of authority or office, which caused substantial damage to legally protected rights, freedoms and interests of individual citizens, or state and public interests”), Part 2 of Art. 240 (“Violation of the rules related to the protection of mineral resources, where it exposed human life and health or environment to danger”) and Art. 254 (“Wasteful use of lands”) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, SBU informs.
Measures to expose the abuser were conducted jointly with the National Police under the procedural supervision of the prosecutor's office.
