SBU detains bridge bomber (Lysychansk-Severodonetsk, 2014)
In the area of the Joint Forces Operation SBU operatives detained a subverter who in 2014 blew up a strategic bridge over the Siverskyi Donets River linking Severodonetsk and Lysychansk.
SBU officers established that the bomber has mastered the methods and skills of explosive blasting while being a member of illegal armed formations. It is documented that the offender was a part of the “Poltynnyk” armed gang and has been staying at the occupied territory of Luhansk region. For personal reasons, two years ago he entered the territory liberated from the invaders and hid in wife’s, acquaintances’ houses, in the sheds and garages in Severodonetsk, Lisichansk, Privolya, Novodruzhesk cities. He also lived in a tent in the woods on the outskirts of cities.
The special forces detained the combatant at the premises of his acquaintance in the village of Shepilovo, Popasnyanskyi district, where he came to change clothes before meeting with an acquaintance. During searches, special forces seized a modified starter pistol “Schmeiser” (calibre 9 mm), a revolver “Nagan” manufactured in WWII days, almost 50 rounds of 7.62 mm calibre to the rifle, 18 traumatic-action rounds of 9 mm, and 3 rifle bayonets.
The detainee also confessed to law enforcers that he mined the road to Soledar and bridges in Lysychansk, and blasted the Tomashovskyi bridge between Lysychansk and Severodonetsk.
Within the framework of the criminal proceedings under Art. 260 (“Creation of unlawful paramilitary or armed formations”) and Art. 263 (“Unlawful handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives”) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine urgent investigative actions are ongoing. Taking into account that the detainee was directly involved in the blasting of the bridge, the procedural perspective of the criminal proceedings against him for committing the crime under Art. 258-3 (terrorist act) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine is being considered.
The operation was carried out jointly with the units of the National Police in the Luhansk region.
