Chernihiv region: state budget short of more than USD 40,000 due to illegal scheme of top customs officer, now detained by SBU
SBU detained a Chernihiv customs official, a member of criminal group, who set up a scheme of illegal import of agricultural products to Ukraine without paying compulsory customs duties.
SBU agents established that over 15 businessmen were involved into the illegal activity. Reportedly, the state budget was raided for UAH 1,000,000 (USD 40,000) every month due to the illegal scheme.
The law enforcement officers detained the customs official near his office on receiving almost UAH 20,000 (USD 800) from customs broker for the assistance in smuggling another batch of products.
In the course of authorised searches at the suspects’ places of residence and offices, the law enforcers seized USD 10,000, as well as documents and computer equipment proving the illegal activity.
The investigation is ongoing under Part 5 of Article 27 (“Types of accomplices”), Part 3 of Article 212 (“Evasion of taxes, duties or other compulsory payments”), and Part 2 Article of 364 (“Abuse of authority or office”) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
