Investigator of Kyiv Police extorts money for returning seized cars to owners
SBU exposed on systematic bribes the senior investigator of the Main Department of the National Police in Kyiv city. The captain of police set up mechanism of money extortion for returning of vehicles previously seized within criminal proceedings.
SBU operatives documented that the official demanded USD 1,000 from a Kyiv resident. For this amount policeman promised to assist in returning of car, seized by the investigative team over forgery of car registration license.
The law-enforcement officers detained the offender on receiving the second part of improper advantage. The advance money of 40 percent of the bribe the official received last week. Within the framework of criminal proceedings initiated under Part 3 Art. 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine the searches at the workplace and residence of the detainee are under way. The issue on serving to detainee a notice of suspicion is being decided.
The operation was conducted by the SBU Office in Kyiv city and Kyiv region special unit on combating corruption and organized crime, in joint operation with the State Bureau of Investigations and the National Police under procedural guidance of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
