SBU blocks sale of spyware to "D/LNR” terrorist organizations
Employees of the Security Service of Ukraine terminated the activities of an organized group in the JFO area, which created a channel for the illegal supply and sale of specialized software and equipment to the temporarily occupied territories of the Donbas.
Special service operatives established that offenders sold to "D/LNR" militants specialized spyware that allowed unauthorized remote control of the work of telephones and their contents without the owners' knowledge. Terrorists also installed programs on mobile phones of Ukrainian citizens during so-called “filtration" measures at checkpoints.
According to experts, with the help of installed programs militants intercepted telephone conversations and SMS-correspondence of citizens, including when using popular messengers. They received access to files hosted on a mobile device and tracked the location of the subscriber. According to the special service, terrorists used the data taken, in particular, for artificial accusations of citizens in "work" for Ukrainian authorities, which allowed them to blackmail civilians for their own benefit.
During authorized investigations in the JFO area at the places of residence of two offenders, law enforcement officers seized UAH 100, 000 and RUB 18, 000, which they received from the accounts of Russian banks for the supply of specialized spy equipment. Employees of the SBU also seized more than three thousand units of specialized equipment, which sent for conducting relevant expert investigations.
At present, urgent investigative actions are under way, the issue of serving to persons involved notice of suspicion of committing a crime, stipulated by Part 2 of Art. 359 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine is being resolved.
