Zhytomyr region: SBU blocks illegal sale of arms
SBU officers in the framework of countering weapons trafficking blocked smuggling of military munitions in the Zhytomyr region.
SBU operatives established that two previously convicted residents of Novohrad-Volynskyi set up the channel of weapons and ammo sales, which they, according to preliminary information, stole from one of the regional military units. The men searched for clients among their acquaintances and representatives of the local criminal circles.
Law enforcers detained both criminals near Novohrad-Volynskyi on recurrent attempt to sell two assault rifles with loading cases, a pistol with ammo, and a silencer, for a total of UAH 65,000 (USD 2,300). During the arrest one of the criminals tried armed resistance to SBU officers.
During the sanctioned investigative actions in a cache equipped in the forest belt law enforcers seized two more assault rifles, three guns, silencer and different calibre ammo.
The investigative actions in the framework of the criminal proceeding initiated under Part 3 Article 410 and Part 1 Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine are under way. The issue of serving a notice of suspicion to the detainees and choosing a measure of restraint is now being decided.
The operation was conducted by the SBU Regional Zhytomyr Office jointly with the State Bureau of Investigation Regional Office located in Khmelnytskyi city, under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor's Office of the Zhytomyr Garrison, Central Region.
