SBU officers blocked the activities of an “underground” industrial complex for processing amber illegally produced in Zhytomyr and Rivne regions.
Operatives of the SBU Zhytomyr Regional Office found that illegal production was organized in one of the settlements of Odesa region by a native the East Asian region, now a citizen of Ukraine. The “businessman” re-equipped a special complex into warehouses, production zone with special equipment for faceting raw amber, and built a mini-dormitory for the workers. As a work force, he used immigrants from Central Asia who live on the territory of Ukraine. Over 50 workers could work at the same time on the illegal production, SBU notes.
The offender smuggled the finished product from the “sun stone” using his personal connections to one of the countries of Asia.
During authorized searches in the production complex initiated within the framework of criminal proceedings, officers of SBU Zhytomyr and Odesa Regional Centres found stone-faceting equipment, faceted stones and almost 15 kilos of ready-made amber jewelry, off-the-record financial statements and a large amount of cash.
From the warehouse the law enforcement officers seized almost six tons of raw amber packaged per-fraction and selected for faceting, as well as more than 500 kilos of processed stone.
The cost of seized amber and its products will be determined after relevant gemological examinations.
The investigative actions in the framework of the criminal proceeding initiated under Part 3 Article 28, Part 4 Art. 240 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine are under way.
The operation was conducted by officers of SBU Zhytomyr Regional Office, under the procedural guidance of the Prosecutor's Office of Zhytomyr region.
