NATO Office of Security and SBU leaders open training course for SBU personnel on security services’ reform
The leadership of the NATO Office of Security and the Security Service of Ukraine took part in the ceremony of opening of the training course for the officers of the Ukrainian security service on reform of the security agencies, organized by the NATO International Secretariat at the SBU National Academy.
The representatives of the NATO Office delegation, an expert from the British Government on legal issues and security institutions, officers of the SBU acting units, lecturers and cadets of the Academy participated in the ceremony.
“The Security Service reform and its modification into the European standard secret service is one of the main tasks on the way to development of the Ukrainian security and defense sector. And this training course will contribute to the fulfillment of this task”, - deputy Head of the SBU Mykhailo Hluhovskyi stressed. He told foreign partners about steps taken by the Ukrainian service in order to make its activity more effective in the situation of war in Eastern Ukraine, as well as about the best practices of the NATO member-states security services adopted by the SBU.
Special attention was paid to current methods of SBU personnel training used by the foreign partners and successfully implemented in the National Academy. According to its Principal Serhii Kudinov, the Academy uses the experience of overseas colleagues to increase professional qualification of the SBU officers.
Director of the NATO Office of Security Todd Brown thoroughly briefed the participants regarding the Complex package of aid signed during the NATO Warsaw Summit. “We highly appreciate partnership with Ukraine and are willing to make a contribution to the SBU reform process. This course is aimed to assist the Service in effective responding to new challenges and threats to national security which security agencies of different countries face at present,” – the Head of the NATO Office of Security said.
Todd Brown also highly appreciated the work of the Security Service of Ukraine in creating a Concept of the SBU and the National Academy Reform, which plays an important role in implementing the reforms. “This process of transformation of the SBU into a modern secret service takes place in the midst of the war on the Eastern border of Ukraine. Your efforts, your work and patriotism impress and are worth respect”, - Todd Brown said.
NATO training course is created directly for the SBU officers and touches upon improving the Ukrainian security and defense legislation, SBU democratic control and public relations, fighting economic crimes and corruption, co-operation with Ukrainian law enforcement bodies and international partners, and personnel management. The course will be given by the best foreign experts in these areas.
