SBU exposes corrupt border guard in Volyn region
Employees of the Security Service of Ukraine, in the framework of counteracting systemic corruption, exposed on bribes inspector of the “Vysotsk” State Border Guard Service unit of Lutsk border detachment.
Operatives of the special service established that the State Border Guard Service inspector of third category set up a mechanism for receiving money from citizens for facilitating the illegal movement across the state border from Ukraine to the EU countries of tobacco products.
SBU officers documented the fact that a sergeant had extorted improper advantage from a local resident in the amount of 15 thousand hryvnias for facilitating the transfer across the state border of twenty-five boxes of cigarettes. Law-enforcers detained the border guard near the state border after receiving the second part of bribe in the amount of UAH 10,000 (USD 300). The SBU operatives documented the offender’s receiving the first part of the unlawful benefit.
Within the framework of criminal proceedings initiated under Part 3 Art. 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, urgent investigative actions on establishing the other possible facts of illegal activities are continuing. The issue on serving a notice of suspicion to the detainee of committing a crime and choosing a measure of restraint is now being settled.
Measures to expose the border guard were carried out jointly with the Territorial Directorate of the State Bureau of Investigations in Lviv, under the procedural direction of the Military Prosecutor's Office.
