SBU exposes network of Internet provocateurs hired by Russian special services to spread panic in Ukraine after introduction of limited martial law (video)

While exercising tasks in counterintelligence protection of the State's interests of information security, SBU officers exposed a participant of the Internet “agent provocateur” network who, following Russian order, distributed fake messages in the social networks aiming to spreading panic among the Ukrainians after the introduction of martial law.

The SBU operatives documented that a resident of Kamianske city in Dnipropetrovsk region distributed information in social networks, calling for changes in territory and border boundaries of Ukraine.

During the authorized investigations, law enforcers found e-mail correspondence between the criminal, Russian citizens and residents of temporarily annexed AR of Crimea who assigned him a task to distribute provocation materials. The "instructions" of the Russian handlers included, in particular, the publication of articles concerning "legitimacy" of Russian Navy actions near the Kerch Strait and disapproval of the Ukrainian sailors’ actions.

SBU officers found that after the introduction of martial law on several Ukrainian territories, the Russians assigned him the task of distributing the fake data. The Russian handlers sent fake information allegedly from the Ukrainian authorities with instructions on "using for military needs" of vehicles with foreign registration, fake pictures of empty Ukrainian shops, large queues at fuel stations and draft notices in the framework of countrywide mobilization.

The SBU received information on the network of such Internet provocateurs being set up in our country. Russian special services’ intention to involve precisely Ukrainians to distribute destructive materials enables the agressor to adapt them to the needs of citizens of our country, creating the illusion of ‘truthful’ messages.

The pre-trial investigation in the framework of criminal proceeding initiated under Article 110 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine is under way.

The investigative actions are ongoing in order to identify the identity of supervisors and persons involved in Internet network of web provocateurs.
