SBU prevents 460 cyberattacks and neutralizes 20 hacker groups in 2020
The SBU has prevented 460 cyber incidents and cyberattacks on public authorities and critical infrastructure since the beginning of the year. Also 2,500 web-resources, used for criminal purposes, and the activities of 20 hacker groups were blocked.
Among the large-scale special operations related to digital services is the exposure of unauthorized interference with information and telecommunication systems of the State Fiscal Service. Initially, an illegal scheme for VAT tax credits generating was exposed. It caused losses to the state budget amounting to UAH 2 billion (USD 70 million) every month. Later on, the SBU exposed a conversion center with a UAH 15 billion (USD 530 million) turnover. Certain companies used this center to evade taxes.
In total, 408 criminal proceedings were initiated during 9 months. Among them 106 cases of unauthorized interference with computers and automated networks (Articles 361, 362, 363 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
Twenty suspects were prosecuted and three were convicted.
Another field of activity of cybersecurity is countering bot farms promoting destructive content, particularly from Russia.
Since January, the SBU has neutralized 16 networks with a capacity of more than 60,000 bots. In September, the SBU officers exposed one such bot farm. It worked for Russia and the so-called DNR.
Bot farms have become much more active on the eve of the upcoming local elections.
Therefore, the SBU is actively countering fakes, anti-state propaganda and separatism on the Internet.
In total, 42 cases were initiated for crimes against national security of Ukraine, 24 people were convicted in 2020.
To remind, the SBU takes measures for blocking the banned Russian applications on Google and Apple platforms. Relevant appeals have already been sent to the above companies.
