SBU CI Department uncovers Armed Forces of Ukraine serviceman recruited by Russia’s special services

SBU CI Department uncovered and terminated the subversive activity of a serviceman of one of the combat brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stationed in Dnipropetrovsk region.

Special service operatives and investigators found that a resident of Svyatohorsk after beginning of Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine moved to the temporarily occupied territory of the Donetsk region and joined the ranks of the so-called “DNR” illegal armed formations. During his “active service” as a part of 100 SMRB “Republican Guard” and 1-st SMRB “Sloviansk Brigade” of the 1-st AC “People’s Militia of DNR” terrorist organizations, he was recruited by officers of the Russian special services.

At the beginning of 2019, the militant left the temporarily occupied territory and joined Armed Forces of Ukraine under contract to fulfil the tasks of Russia’s FSB on receiving intelligence in the military sphere. The attacker collected information, in particular, on the deployment of military units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including in the JFO area, their movement, number, type of weapons, personnel, fundamental and personal data of commanders. Law enforcement officers detained agent of the Russian special services, uncovered by the SBU, near the military unit during an attempt to transfer the collected intelligence data.

The serviceman was served a notice of suspicion of committing crimes provided for by Part 1 Art. 111 and Part 1 Art. 258-3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The choosing of a preventive measure is being resolved. The operation to terminate subversive activities was conducted jointly with the SBU Office in Rivne region under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor's Office of Rivne region.
