SBU protects aviation industry critical infrastructure facilities in integrated manner

The SBU Main Directorate of Counter-Intelligence Protection of the State’s Economic Interests conducts system control over the security of national aviation against possible terrorist acts and subversives.

For the early detection and prevention of potential threats in the industry critical infrastructure facilities the SBU with the State Aviation Service conducts appropriate trainings. The trainings simulate the seizure of aircraft or hostages, the placement of weapons-mock-ups and explosives on the boards of aircraft or at the airports. The trainings also involve monitoring the actions of airport and airlines personnel when reporting a conditional terrorist attack.

In 2018-2020, the SBU and the State Aviation Service conducted situational experiments at the largest airports in the country. As a result of the trainings, conclusions and recommendations were provided to the management and personnel of the airlines regarding removing of the identified limitations.

The effectiveness of such trainings is proven by daily practice. So, over the past year, several attempts to transport prohibited items and belongings have been detected and prevented. In particular, RGD-5 grenades were found in postal items at Lviv and Boryspil airports.

The SBU will continue such practice so that our citizens feel safe travelling both Ukraine and abroad.
