Khmelnytskyi region: SBU terminates criminal group, which sold drugs to convicts

The Security Service of Ukraine exposed in Khmelnytskyi region an organized group on the sale of drugs and psychotropic substances in prison.

According to the preliminary investigation, the group consisted of more than 10 persons, including those previously convicted of serious crimes. The attackers smuggled drugs to the detainees, hiding them in parcels with consumer items. As a result, the convicts sold narcotic substances on the territory of the correctional facility.

Additionally, the group was headed by local criminal authorities.

Law enforcement officers detained two gang leaders on attempt to smuggle another batch of drugs into prison.

During searches at the suspects’ places of residence and in the territory of the penitentiary, SBU officers seized almost 2 kg of drugs and psychotropics, firearms and other evidences proving illegal activity.

The confiscated substances and weapons were sent for further examination. The detainees were suspected of committing crimes under Part 2 Art.307 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The issue of choosing custody as a type of detention is being decided.

The operation was carried out jointly with the Department of Strategic Investigations of the National Police in Khmelnytskyi region under the legal supervision of the Prosecutor's Office.
