SBU blocks production of counterfeit antiseptics in Stryi town
The Security Service of Ukraine blocked the manufacture and sale of counterfeit disinfectants dangerous to the health in Stryi town, Lviv region.
Allegedly, several local businessmen decided to take advantage of the epidemiological situation due to the spread of coronavirus infection and organized artisanal production of antiseptics in rented warehouses. They used a car glass washer as a raw material, which includes the toxic substance ethylene glycol. The suspects sold counterfeits to the public under the guise of a non-existent brand through online platforms and their own online store. According to preliminary estimates, they produced up to 3 tons of counterfeit per week.
According to experts, prolonged use of such "disinfectants" can cause significant harm to the body and provoke serious diseases. Currently, the measures are being taken to remove hazardous substances from sale.
Law enforcement officers conducted four searches at the places of production and storage of counterfeits. During the investigation, 2 tons of ready-to-sale products, 1 ton of raw materials, 3,000 containers for packaging, 35,000 labels, financial documents confirming illegal activities were seized.
Criminal proceeding was initiated under Article 227 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Investigative actions are under way, all sales facts are being established.
The pre-trial investigation is carried out by investigators of the Main Directorate of National Police in Lviv region under the supervision of the local Prosecutor’s Office.
