Kharkiv region: SBU exposes policemen extorting money from drug addicts
The Security Service of Ukraine exposed policemen of the Kyiv District Police Department in Kharkiv region on extorting “tribute” from drug addicts.
Allegedly, a group of police officers, including representatives of the anti-drug unit, extorted money from drug addicts, who were spotted during the purchase of drugs from so-called "bookmarks". The size of the bribe for non-prosecution ranged from USD 500 to 1,500.
The participants also involved intermediaries to obtain money.
The SBU documented 5 facts of bribery by members of a group, with the total amount of bribes almost UAH 150,000 (USD 5,400).
During 15 searches of the suspects' residences, offices and vehicles, the SBU officers seized money allegedly illegally obtained, as well as other evidence of illegal actions.
Currently, four police officers were served notices of suspicion under Part 3 of Art. 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The issue of choosing custody as a form of detention and serving notices of suspicion to other participants is being settled.
The investigation is underway to establish possible involvement in the illegal activities of other police officers.
The operation was conducted jointly with the SBU Main Department for Fighting Corruption and Organized Crime, investigators of the State Bureau of Investigation under the supervision of the Prosecutor's Office of Kharkiv region.
