Ivan Bakanov: In six months, SBU prevents 3 terrorist attacks, detains dozens of militants and agents of foreign intelligence services
"During the first half of 2020, the Security Service of Ukraine prevented three terrorist attacks and detained four involved persons", said the Head of the SBU Ivan Bakanov, commenting on the outcomes of the Service for six months of this year.
"Our main mission is not to fight the consequences of crimes, but counteract its commission. Every Ukrainian should make sure that he and his family are safe, regardless of the belief, political affiliation, or social status", the Head of the Service Ivan Bakanov emphasized.
Within six months, the courts have issued to persons previously detained by the SBU 53 sentences for encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine and 28 - for terrorist activities.
Among SBU important achievements was a high-profile exposing operation to detain a major general of the Service suspected of cooperating with the Russian FSB.
Moreover, the SBU detained the head and members of the Russian special services network, who were collected and transmitted information on Ukrainian military facilities, ATO / JFO participants, etc.
An ISIS leader named "Al Bara Shyshani", previously detained by the SBU in Kyiv region, was extradited to Georgia.
In general, 254 foreigners involved in terrorism and religious extremist organizations have been banned from entering Ukraine.
Another 45 court sentences came into force, particularly 11 of high treason, 16 of establishment of a terrorist group or organization, and one is the crime of espionage.
During the SBU CI operation, a former police officer was detained and sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment for high treason. A Chinese citizen convicted of espionage was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Separately, five foreign diplomats were prematurely removed from the office for activities that do not comply with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
