Our Defender’s call sign is Buryi.

‘Today we welcome back an employee of the Security Service of Ukraine, who until the last minute defended Azovstal side by side with Redis. Before being captured, he managed to secretly pass his chevrons to us. It is a great honor for me to personally hand over these chevrons as a symbol of your return to the SSU team,’ Acting SSU Head Vasyl Maliuk congratulated the warrior.

Before russia’s full-scale invasion, our colleague worked in the 2nd Directorate of the SSU in Donetsk and Luhansk regions (stationed in Mariupol) and was engaged in combating illegal armed formations of the so-called ‘dnr’.

When the enemy besieged the city, Buryi together with other colleagues stood up for the defence of his hometown. Coordinating with the Azov Staff, he continued to do his job: exposing russian intelligence networks, artillery observers and traitors.

Due to his efforts, important information was obtained from captured occupiers, the sites where Ukrainian prisoners are kept were established as well as the identities of their torturers.

Later, together with the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Buryi helped demine the road, which was to be used to transport the wounded.

We should note that among Azovstal defenders were also other SSU employees. After a ‘bunker buster’ bomb hit one of the plant’s bunkers, Vasyl Bogach, a colleague and mentor of our Hero, and Oleksandr Suprunov, a former employee of the SSU Special Operations Center ‘A’ in Donetsk region, went missing.

Buryi himself was wounded in April by tank fire.

‘These are chevrons with our insignia, and the enemy was not supposed to see them. You have completely fulfilled your military and professional duty, you are the one who will continue to build up the Security Service of Ukraine together with us,’ Vasyl Maliuk noted.
