During first half of 2021 SBU CI exposes 3 intelligence networks and detains 18 agents of Russian special services

In the first half of 2021, the SBU CI exposed 3 intelligence networks in Donetsk, Luhansk, Mykolaiv and Odesa regions and detained 18 agents of Russian special services.

A spy network performed tasks of the MGB LNR in the area of the Joint Forces Operation. The agents for money collected and provided their handlers with intelligence on the location and redeployment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Moreover, they prepared a terrorist attack by poisoning servicemen with a chemical substance in Luhansk region.

Due to CI findings, 167 criminal proceedings were instituted on charges of treason, espionage and creation of terrorist organizations, 59 sentences came into effect.

In addition, SBU CI officers seized illegal weapons, including components of aircraft, armored vehicles and anti-aircraft missile systems worth more than UAH 1 bn (USD 36.7 m). The seized items were sent to the Ministry of Defense.

At the same time, the SBU military counterintelligence exposed 21 foreign agents and 14 IAF members.

In total, state losses of more than UAH 3.8 bn (USD 140 m) were prevented. In particular, the SBU military CI suppressed illegal purchasing of overpriced obsolete weapons for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and embezzlement of UAH 400 m (15 m) budget funds on research and development works.
