SBU CI exposes and terminates espionage activities of Belarusian KGB agent

In Volyn region, the SBU CI exposed a citizen of the Republic of Belarus who collected intelligence to the detriment of Ukrainian state security.

The investigation established that the agent, recruited by Belarusian KGB, arrived in Ukraine with intention to collect intelligence and coordinate other illegal activities.

The SBU documented that the agent had to collet relevant information about the following:

  • situation in the border area;
  • security level of the state border of Ukraine;
  • policing of state border;
  • technical equipment and number of operating personnel of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine;
  • character references and compromising information on border guards and customs officials;

For this purpose, the agent attempted to involve in secret cooperation officers of the State Tax Service, who had access to classified information.

Apart from collecting intelligence, the curators wanted the agent to set up a scheme for smuggling weapons and dual-use items.

The collected data indicates that the agent’s activity was aimed at creating provocations and press events to accuse Ukraine of weapons supply to destabilize situation in the Republic of Belarus.

The agent was served a notice of suspicion of espionage.

The investigation is ongoing.

The operation was conducted jointly with the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, under the supervision of Volyn Region Prosecutor’s Office.
