Odesa region: SBU blocks customs clearance fraud

The Security Service of Ukraine blocked the scheme of receiving bribes for customs clearance of foreign cars at the Odesa customs. Allegedly, the suspects managed to unlawfully register almost 100 vehicles every month.

A senior state inspector of the customs checkpoint extorted money from legal entities and individuals for unimpeded customs clearance of cars from South Korea and the United States. In addition, the customs officer promised to accelerate customs operations. The cost of such "services" ranged from USD 100 to 300, depending on the brand of car.

The law enforcement officers detained the customs officer red-handed, while receiving another bribe for the unimpeded registration of seven cars.

The customs officer is to be served a notice of suspicion of taking a bribe. The investigation is ongoing to identify all persons involved in the illegal activities.

The operation was carried out together with investigators from the State Bureau of Investigation, under the supervision of the Odesa Regional Prosecutor's Office.
