Zakarpattia region: SBU blocks illegal car import scheme
The SBU exposed the officials of Zakarpattia customs on illegal import of cars with foreign registration into Ukraine.
The operatives established that the illegal scheme was organized by the officials of Solotvyno customs post jointly with other civilians. Customs officers involved foreigners in illegal activities in order to legalize this fraud.
At the border, the offenders demanded money from drivers for unimpeded registration of cars arriving from abroad in temporary import regime.
The average sum of their “services” was EUR 700 per car. Allegedly, they passed 10 cars through the customs post per shift.
The corruption scheme was in act during 3 months. It involved two shifts of customs officers.
The SBU exposed the organizer and two intermediaries on taking a bribe (EUR 2,600) for import of 4 cars.
The investigation is ongoing upon the fact of taking a bribe.
The issue of serving the suspects suspicion notices is currently being resolved.
The investigation is ongoing in order to establish all the circumstances of the case. The involvement of State Border Guard Service officials in the scheme is being checked.
The operation was conducted jointly with the SBU Main Directorate for Combating Corruption and Organized Crime, the Territorial Department of the State Bureau of Investigation, located in Lviv city, under the legal supervision of the Military Prosecutor's Office of Uzhhorod garrison of the Western region of Ukraine.
